How to Spark Hope

Remember the Ember: Sparking Your Inner Flame

In life’s journey, we often face challenges that dim our light, leaving us feeling lost or uninspired. But even in those darkest moments, a small ember still glows within us—full of potential, just waiting to be reignited.

It’s a powerful reminder that we have the strength to breathe life back into our passions and dreams, no matter how faint they may seem.

This week marked the first anniversary of my mum’s passing. I went to Wellington to be with my kids, to share in both the love and the loss. We had an incredibly beautiful time together full of connection, memories, and moments that felt like healing.

But when I returned home to Nelson, the day after, an unexpected wave of heavy, dark sadness washed over me. A year had passed, yet the surrealness of her absence still lingered. I found myself drifting into despair, questioning my path, my purpose, and whether I was making a positive difference to anyone. I felt adrift.

Instead of resisting, I chose to welcome and embrace it as part of my grief journey.

I reminded myself that my soul’s ember—the spark of my passionate heart—was still there. It just needed some extra love and attention to turn into a flame once again. So, I began to do small, self-loving things: pausing to breathe, moving gently through my day, and remembering that I am deeply connected to all that is.

Something shifted in me. My energy lightened, and almost as if in response, the universe offered me little gifts of joy: a beautiful bunch of peonies from my lovely friend and neighbour, Lee; a letter from the UK; and the sight of baby birds chirping outside my window.

With that shift, the world around me seemed to brighten. That spark of mine had changed not only my energy but the things that unfolded around me.

Here are some of the things I do to fuel my inner glow and rise from the ashes, again and again:

By sharing this story, I hope to remind you: that the ember inside you never dies. It may flicker, but with care and love, it can reignite into something bright and powerful. Be gentle with yourself, embrace your journey, and know that brighter days are always ahead.

1. Nurture Positive Connections

Surround yourself with people who uplift and inspire you. Engage with those who encourage your dreams and support your journey. Their energy can help reignite your own, reminding you that you’re not alone in your pursuits.

2. Set Intentional Goals

Take time to reflect on what truly matters to you. Setting small, achievable goals can provide direction and motivation. Each step you take is like adding fuel to your ember, bringing it closer to a flame.

3. Practice Self-Compassion

Be gentle with yourself. Recognise that it’s okay to have moments of doubt or struggle. Embrace these feelings as part of your growth. Just as an ember needs time to transform into a flame, so do you. Allow yourself the grace to evolve at your own pace.

4. Engage in Inspiring Activities

Find activities that reignite your passions—whether it’s writing, gardening, exercise, or volunteering. Engaging in what you love can fan the flames of inspiration and remind you of your purpose.

5. Reflect and Breathe

Take a moment to pause and reflect. Breathing exercises or mindfulness practices can help clear your mind and connect you to that inner ember. Use this time to visualise your flame growing brighter with each breath. Light a candle and see the spark turn into a beautiful flame.

6. Embrace the Journey

Remember, babe that the process of reigniting your ember is a journey. Celebrate the small victories along the way. Each time you recognise the ember and take steps to nurture it, you’re moving closer to a roaring flame.

Remember the ember that resides within you. It symbolises hope, resilience, and the potential for renewal.

By nurturing your connections, setting intentional goals, and engaging in activities that inspire you, you can spark that ember into a bright, guiding flame. Embrace your journey, and let your inner light shine!
