Contagious Stress: Why Your Mood Matters!

Writer's picture: Caron ProctorCaron Proctor

Our emotional states are intertwined; your stress affects me, and mine affects you. Together, we have the power to either lift each other up or weigh each other down.

Ever walked into a room and suddenly felt a wave of anxiety? Or hang out with someone stressed and notice your mood sinking, too? It’s not just in your head; it’s the powerful chemistry of how we influence each other.

When we're stressed, our bodies release cortisol—a hormone meant to help us handle tough situations. But guess what? Some of that cortisol seeps out, especially through sweat, sending invisible signals to those around us. We might not be absorbing this hormone directly, but our brains pick up on it and respond, causing us to feel that heightened anxiety.

Have you ever entered a room and immediately experienced a surge of anxiety? Or spent time with a stressed person and observed your own mood deteriorating as well?

It's not just a figment of your imagination; it's the impactful chemistry of how we affect one another.

This whole process happens subconsciously, thanks to our limbic system, which picks up on these chemical signals. It’s amazing how we can sense someone else’s stress without them saying a word!

So, why should you care? We all have a responsibility—not just to manage our own stress for our sake but to consider how we affect others. The energy we bring into our shared spaces can shift the mood and wellbeing of everyone around us.

Let’s be mindful of our impact! Next time you’re feeling stressed, remember: it’s not just about you. You could be unintentionally dragging others down. Stress management isn’t just self-care; it’s about lifting each other up.

Let's be conscious of the energy we bring into our common areas, generating a wave of positivity that positively impacts our lives and the people around us.

I’d love to hear how you unwind or protect yourself from cortisol buildup. If you’re curious about how stress is affecting your health and happiness—yours or someone else’s—reach out! I’m here to help!
